Microsoft tests modern Windows Run, says it’s faster than legacy dialog

Microsoft Reinvents Win+R and Pretends It’s a Big Fucking Deal

Alright, gather round, you poor bastards. Microsoft is once again poking the Windows corpse with a stick and shouting “LOOK, IT’S MODERN NOW!” This time, they’re testing a shiny new “modern” Run dialog in Windows 11, because apparently the old Win+R box that’s worked perfectly fine for decades is now a problem that needs fixing. Fuck me sideways.

According to Microsoft, this new Run thing is “faster” than the legacy dialog. Faster at what? Appearing 0.2 milliseconds sooner so some PM can slap a win on their performance review? It’s now hooked into Windows Search, meaning when you type a command, it can also rummage through apps, settings, and files like a crackhead tearing apart your house looking for loose change.

The UI has been dragged into the “modern” era too — flatter, cleaner, and more sterile, like a hospital room where usability goes to fucking die. You still hit Win+R, but instead of the classic tiny box, you get a search-powered dialog that tries really hard to be clever. Sometimes it is. Sometimes it’s just Windows Search being Windows Search, which means wrong, slow, and confidently full of shit.

Microsoft claims this new Run experience is quicker because it’s built on newer plumbing and search tech. Translation: they bolted it onto the same indexing system that already chews CPU in the background and hoped no one would notice. It’s currently being tested in Windows 11 preview builds, because of course it is — you are the QA department now, congratulations.

So yeah, the Run dialog got a facelift, a search engine, and a marketing blowjob. Whether it’s actually better or just another layer of crap between you and typing “cmd” remains to be seen. But hey, at least someone at Microsoft gets to say they “modernized” something without fixing the shit that actually breaks every Patch Tuesday.

Now if you’ll excuse me, this reminds me of the time I replaced a rock-solid shell script with a “modern” web dashboard because management wanted buttons. It crashed, lost logs, and I still got blamed. Same energy, different decade.
