Google rolls out fake call detection to protect against AI deepfake impersonation scams

Google Tries to Save You From Getting Scammed by Robot Assholes

Alright, listen up. It turns out the world is full of gullible humans and malicious AI-generated shitheads, so Google has decided to do something vaguely useful for once. They’re rolling out fake call detection to help stop AI-powered deepfake impersonation scams — you know, those bullshit calls where a robot pretends to be your boss, your bank, or your crying “kid” who definitely isn’t your kid.

The idea is simple: Google’s on-device AI listens for scammy patterns during phone calls and warns you when something smells like a digital pile of crap. If the voice sounds fake, manipulative, or scripted like a bad scam call center in hell, Android throws up a warning before you empty your bank account like an idiot.

This isn’t some cloud-based privacy nightmare either (at least according to Google). The analysis happens locally on your phone, so your embarrassing conversations about cat food and crypto losses aren’t being hoovered up — allegedly. It’s aimed squarely at stopping deepfake impersonation, which has become the scammer equivalent of upgrading from rocks to fucking laser cannons.

Of course, this won’t save everyone. Some people will still ignore the warning, trust the fake voice, and wire money anyway because humans are spectacularly bad at listening to advice — even when their phone is screaming “THIS IS A SCAM, YOU DUMBASS.”

Still, credit where it’s due: Google is at least trying to duct-tape the holes in the mess that generative AI helped unleash. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than nothing, which has been the industry standard for years.

This all reminds me of the time a “bank manager” called me and demanded my password. I told him it was “fuckoff123” and he hung up. Technology changes, but scammers are still lazy shitbags.
