Instagram users locked out after Meta AI abused to steal accounts

Instagram Users Locked Out Because Meta’s AI Is a Dumb, Abusable Piece of Shit

So here we go again. Meta, the fine purveyor of half-baked tech disasters, rolled out an AI-powered account recovery system for Instagram. You know, to “help” users. Naturally, criminals figured out how to weaponize the damn thing in about five minutes.

Attackers abused Meta’s AI verification process—specifically the selfie video and ID checks—to hijack accounts. Instead of protecting users, the AI happily handed accounts over to scammers like a drunk sysadmin giving root access to strangers at a bar. Result? Legit users locked out of their own damn accounts while the thieves waltzed off with control.

Victims reported that once the AI screwed them over, Meta’s support was about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. Appeals went unanswered, tickets vanished into the void, and users were left screaming into the algorithmic abyss while their accounts got looted, rebranded, or used for crypto scam bullshit.

The core problem? Meta trusted AI to make security decisions without enough human oversight. Shocker. The system couldn’t reliably tell the difference between a real account owner and a fraudster gaming the process. And because everything is automated, when it breaks, there’s no human there to unfuck the situation.

So once again, AI is doing exactly what management wanted: cutting costs, replacing people, and setting the whole goddamn house on fire. Users get locked out, criminals cash in, and Meta shrugs while mumbling something about “improving our systems.” Yeah. Sure. Whatever.

If you’re an Instagram user, the lesson is simple: Meta’s AI doesn’t give a shit about you. You’re just training data and collateral damage in their endless quest to automate everything that shouldn’t be automated.

This whole mess reminds me of the time some genius replaced a working authentication system with “smart” facial recognition, locked out the CEO, and then went home early because “the AI said access denied.” Same energy, bigger blast radius.
