Databricks’ former AI chief thinks he can cut AI’s power bill by 1,000x

Databricks’ Ex-AI Boss Says He’ll Slash AI’s Power Bill by 1000x (Yeah, Sure)

Alright, gather round, you silicon-worshipping muppets. The ex–AI brain at Databricks has apparently looked at today’s AI power bills — the ones that make data centers glow like nuclear test sites — and said, “Nah, fuck that, I can cut this shit by one thousand times.” Because obviously the rest of the industry is just too stupid or lazy to think of that.

According to TechCrunch, this former Databricks AI hotshot thinks today’s models are burning obscene amounts of electricity thanks to bloated architectures, dumb brute-force training, and GPUs guzzling power like it’s free beer at a sysadmin conference. His big idea? Smarter model design, tighter hardware–software integration, and ditching the “just throw more GPUs at it” bullshit that Big Tech loves.

Instead of scaling models until the power grid taps out and cries for its mummy, he’s betting on efficiency-first AI: leaner models, better math, and systems that don’t need a small country’s GDP in electricity just to autocomplete your shitty email. The pitch is that if you fix the fundamentals, you don’t need to keep setting money (and the planet) on fire.

Of course, every AI startup ever says they’ll be 10x better. This guy cranks it up to 1000x, because why the fuck not? If he’s right, hyperscalers save billions and stop melting the grid. If he’s wrong, congrats, we get another VC-funded power-hungry turd with a slick deck and no results.

Either way, it’s refreshing to hear someone say the quiet part out loud: current AI is an energy-hogging dumpster fire, and “just buy more GPUs” is not a fucking strategy.

This all reminds me of the time some bright spark told me he’d “optimize” the data center by turning off half the servers. He pulled the wrong breaker, took down payroll, and blamed DNS. Same energy. We’ll see if this one actually works or just blows another fuse.
