Microsoft Finally Unfucks a Windows Bug That Was Randomly Killing Some Dell PCs

Right, so here’s the latest steaming pile from the wondrous world of Microsoft and OEM clownery: some Dell machines were shutting down, restarting, or generally acting like they’d been possessed by a drunk intern with admin rights. The culprit? A Windows update bug tied to Dell’s BIOS and firmware update nonsense. Because apparently just making computers work normally was too much to fucking ask.

Microsoft has now rolled out a fix for the problem, which was hammering certain Dell systems after they installed updates. Users were seeing unexpected shutdowns and other stability issues, which is always a lovely little surprise when you’re in the middle of, you know, actually using the bloody machine.

The bug was linked to systems with Dell’s firmware update tools interacting badly with Windows. In other words, one vendor shoves in their special update sauce, another vendor pushes out Windows changes, and the result is the customer gets a laptop that falls over like a cheap deckchair. If you’re running one of the affected Dell systems, it’s worth checking for the latest updates and reading the support guidance before smashing the keyboard and blaming the hardware goblins. Though frankly, if you did blame hardware goblins, I wouldn’t say you were wrong.

Anecdote time: years ago, I watched a fleet of “enterprise-ready” desktops brick themselves after a vendor update tool decided BIOS integrity was more of a suggestion than a requirement.
