Snap Finally Stops Throwing Money at Fully AI-Generated Spotlight Slop
Right, so Snapchat has apparently discovered what the rest of us with a functioning brain cell already knew: if you pay people for fully AI-generated crap, you get an industrial firehose of low-effort bullshit. In this delightful little corporate revelation, Snap says it’s no longer going to reward fully AI-generated content on Spotlight, its TikTok knockoff feed for vertical distraction zombies.
The gist is simple. Snap still wants creators using AI tools, because of course it bloody does — every tech company is contractually obligated to glue “AI” onto everything short of the office kettle. But if a post is entirely made by AI, Snap isn’t going to pay out rewards for it anymore. Translation: “Please use our shiny robot tools, just don’t dump pure machine-made shit into the feed and expect us to fund your spam empire.”
This comes after Spotlight apparently got swamped with synthetic junk as people chased creator payouts with the least amount of human effort possible. Shocking, I know. Offer money for engagement, toss in generative AI, and suddenly every chancer with a prompt box and no dignity starts mass-producing uncanny nonsense. Who could have fucking predicted it?
Snap’s new position seems to be that AI should assist human creativity, not replace it outright in content they’re rewarding. That means hybrid stuff — where a real human being still does some actual work — may still be fine. Fully AI-generated videos, though? No reward money for that anymore. The company is basically trying to stem the tide of algorithmic landfill before Spotlight turns into a complete septic tank.
And honestly, this is less some noble defense of artistry and more a belated act of platform hygiene. If users keep getting fed endless soulless AI sludge, they bugger off. If advertisers see a feed full of autogenerated garbage, they get twitchy. If creators making original stuff have to compete with ten thousand bot-cranked videos a day, they get pissed off and leave. So Snap has decided, in its infinite wisdom, to close the barn door after the horse has shat all over the server room.
The broader point, in case anyone in management is still chewing on the furniture, is that generative AI has made content farms obscenely easy to run. Platforms spent years building creator reward systems, then acted surprised when people optimized those systems into unusable crap. Now they’re scrambling to draw lines between “AI-assisted” and “fully AI-generated,” which should be a fun bureaucratic nightmare full of edge cases, appeals, and furious spammers pretending their masterpiece of haunted six-fingered nonsense involved “substantial human input.”
So there you have it: Snapchat still likes AI, still wants creators, still wants engagement, but no longer wants to hand cash directly to fully machine-generated Spotlight posts. Not because it found religion, but because the flood of AI slop was making the place look like a digital skip full of flaming rubbish.
Anecdote time: this reminds me of a sysadmin I knew who set up an auto-ticketing system to save time, only to discover users had learned to game it by submitting the same useless request fifty times with slightly different wording. His solution was elegant: he stopped rewarding the behavior and let the whiners scream into the void. Funny how that works when the shit finally hits the fan.
