Google Blogger Nukes Hundreds of Blogs Over a Malware Screwup, Because Of Course It Fucking Did

So here’s the latest pile of corporate incompetence: Google’s Blogger platform apparently locked down hundreds of blogs after its malware detection systems had a little tantrum and started flagging perfectly innocent sites as malicious. You know, the usual “AI-powered safety” bollocks where a machine confidently gets everything wrong and some poor bastards have to clean up the mess.

According to the report, blog owners started finding their sites marked as malware or getting restricted access, despite not actually serving up any dodgy code. That’s right: legitimate blogs got smacked with warnings and blocks because Google’s automated systems decided to shit the bed. As always, when automation fails, it fails at scale, because why ruin one site when you can screw over hundreds at once?

The affected users took to Google’s support forums to complain — because naturally there was no clean, sane, human way to get the problem fixed quickly. Eventually, Google acknowledged there was a false positive issue affecting Blogger and started rolling back the bad detections. How generous. First they break your blog, then they graciously inform you they’re “working on it.” Stunning professionalism.

The whole mess highlights the same old crap: massive platforms rely on automated moderation and security systems that are treated like gospel right up until they start randomly torching innocent users. Then everyone acts surprised, as if a giant opaque system with minimal accountability producing catastrophic false positives is some kind of rare fucking event instead of standard operating procedure.

To be fair, Google did reportedly begin restoring impacted blogs once the issue was identified. But if your website got branded as malware in the meantime, that’s not exactly a minor inconvenience. That can trash visitor trust, kill traffic, and leave site owners scrambling to prove they’re not running some cursed scam operation just because an algorithm had a drunken episode.

So the short version is this: Blogger’s malware detection glitched, hundreds of harmless blogs got locked or flagged, users raised hell, and Google eventually admitted the problem was a false positive and started undoing the damage. Another day, another overengineered system making life worse for everyone while executives probably call it “improving user safety.” What a load of shit.

Anyway, this reminds me of the time a monitoring system I inherited auto-paged half the department at 3 a.m. because it mistook a log rotation job for a catastrophic storage failure.
