In other words, the same shiny machine-learning toolbox that’s supposed to help cure disease can also be nudged into helping produce nastier ones. Splendid. We’ve automated malware, spam, surveillance, and now we’re poking at biological catastrophe. Humanity really does love taking a useful tool and immediately asking, “How can we make this kill people faster?”

One of the big points is that AI reduces friction. That’s the real bastard here. You no longer need every piece of specialist knowledge up front if a model can help fill in gaps, summarize research, suggest mutations, or identify likely effects. It doesn’t magically turn every basement moron into a supervillain overnight, but it absolutely makes bad ideas easier to explore. And that’s enough to make any sane admin, scientist, or sentient toaster start swearing.

As for me, this reminds me of a lab IT ticket from years back: some cheerful researcher said they needed “temporary elevated access” to run an experimental model. Temporary, my arse. Three hours later they’d filled a storage array with unlabeled data, broken permissions for half the department, and asked whether backups could restore “the important bits” without defining what the fuck the important bits were. And now we’re letting AI near pathogen design. Marvellous. Truly marvellous.
