Microsoft to Windows 10 LTSC 2021 Users: Upgrade Now, You Poor Bastards

Right, here’s the latest load of corporate bullshit from Redmond. Microsoft is now telling admins running Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 that they need to start planning their bloody upgrade path, because support isn’t forever, no matter how much everyone wishes this frozen, mostly-stable relic could be left the hell alone.

The whole point of LTSC, in case the marketing drones forgot, was to give enterprises a version of Windows that wouldn’t change every five bloody minutes. Fewer feature updates, less random nonsense, more stability. You know, the sort of thing sysadmins actually want instead of AI clownery stapled onto the taskbar. But now Microsoft is doing what Microsoft does best: reminding everyone that even the “long-term” option has a shelf life, and it’s time to start moving before the support cliff arrives and everything turns to unsupported shit.

The article says Microsoft is pushing customers to upgrade from LTSC 2021 to something newer, with Windows 11 Enterprise LTSC 2024 being the obvious destination. That means admins get the usual delightful exercise of checking hardware compatibility, application support, deployment planning, and all the other joyous crap that comes with touching systems that were working perfectly fine yesterday.

And of course, because this is Windows 11, there’s the extra kick in the teeth: hardware requirements. TPM 2.0, supported CPUs, Secure Boot, and the rest of the compatibility bingo card. So if your estate is full of older but still perfectly serviceable machines, congratulations — Microsoft would like you to consider them obsolete pieces of shit and spend money accordingly.

The article also points out that this isn’t some vague “someday” warning. It’s a plan now, not later message. Because if you wait until the last minute, you’ll be doing emergency migrations under pressure, which is exactly when vendors, managers, and random executive morons suddenly discover they all have “critical” apps nobody documented properly. Then it becomes your problem, because obviously it’s always your fucking problem.

In short: Microsoft is telling LTSC 2021 customers that the clock is ticking, Windows 11 LTSC 2024 is the intended path, and anyone hoping to sit on Windows 10 forever needs to wake up and smell the licensing bullshit. If your kit can’t run Windows 11, you’re looking at replacement plans. If your apps are ancient, you’re looking at testing. If your management has ignored this until now, you’re looking at the usual panic-fuelled circus.

So the takeaway is simple: start assessing devices, test your applications, check your hardware, and build a migration plan now, before the whole thing becomes an expensive, screaming clusterfuck. Because Microsoft has spoken, and when Microsoft says “upgrade,” what they really mean is “we’ve already decided, and you can get fucked if your environment isn’t ready.”

Related anecdote: years ago, I watched a manager proudly declare we’d “skip the next migration cycle” because our existing estate was “stable.” Six months later, support deadlines, hardware incompatibility, and one crusty line-of-business app turned the place into a flaming pile of shit held together with spreadsheets and denial. We still migrated, of course — just badly, expensively, and while the manager was on holiday. Funny how that always bloody happens.
