Google Finally Swats a Mountain of Notification Shit
Right, here’s the gist, because apparently the internet was somehow still allowed to be an even bigger septic tank than usual. Google says Chrome on Android is now blocking 7 billion unwanted notifications every single fucking day. That’s billion with a b, in case anyone thought this was just a minor irritation and not a full-scale industrial-grade abuse machine.
The problem is the usual garbage: shady sites nagging users into allowing notifications, then using that permission to shovel scams, fake virus alerts, bullshit prizes, and other scammy crap straight onto people’s phones. You click one wrong thing while trying to read a recipe or pirate some nonsense, and suddenly your phone starts screaming that you’ve “won” an iPhone or that your device is infected with seventeen kinds of digital plague. Absolute shitshow.
So Google, in a rare moment of usefulness, says Chrome has been using on-device machine learning to identify abusive notification prompts and cut them off before they can start flinging turds at users. The company claims this has resulted in a massive drop in those unwanted Android notifications. In other words, Chrome is finally acting like a bouncer instead of the drunk idiot holding the door open for every scammer in town.
They’re also going after scammy notifications after permission has already been granted. If Chrome detects a notification is likely malicious, misleading, or generally full of shit, it can warn users and give them the option to unsubscribe or see the blocked content. Which is nice, because expecting users to manage notification permissions intelligently has always been a bit like expecting raccoons to run payroll.
Google also says it improved detection for abusive websites more broadly, including those using notifications as part of fraud campaigns. That means fewer fake tech support warnings, fewer “you have a virus” popups, fewer bullshit crypto lures, and fewer scam messages trying to separate gullible people from their money. Not zero, mind you. The internet is still packed wall-to-wall with enterprising bastards. But fewer.
The whole point is this: website notifications were supposed to be useful. Instead, scammers treated them like a free catapult for lies, panic, and ad-riddled sewage. Google has now tightened Chrome’s defenses enough to block an absurd amount of that crap every day. Good. About damn time.
Of course, none of this means the web is suddenly clean. It just means one particularly noxious pipe has been partially unclogged. The scammers are still out there, still adapting, still looking for the next idiot-friendly trick. But if Chrome is knocking out billions of abusive notifications daily, that’s billions fewer chances for some malicious little parasite to yell “YOUR PHONE IS INFECTED” at someone’s nan.
Anecdote time: years ago, I watched a user click “Allow” on every bloody prompt that appeared because they thought it made the computer “go faster.” Ten minutes later they were buried under fake McAfee warnings, casino spam, and miracle investment crap, then asked me why IT “allowed this to happen.” I told them the same thing I’d tell the entire internet: if you keep opening the door to every screaming lunatic, don’t act shocked when your house fills up with shit.
