Microsoft 365 Business: Exchange Online mailbox quota rises to 100 GB

Microsoft 365 Business Mailboxes Hit 100 GB, Because Apparently Nobody Ever Deletes Their Shit

Right, here’s the gist of the bloody thing: Microsoft has decided to bump Exchange Online mailbox quotas for Microsoft 365 Business plans up to 100 GB. That’s the same headline number a lot of the bigger-fancy-enterprise types already get, which means the small-business crowd can now hoard twice as much ancient crap, unread newsletters, and pointless “just circling back” emails before anyone has to pretend records management matters.

The article explains that this increase applies to the relevant Microsoft 365 Business subscriptions using Exchange Online, and it’s basically Microsoft giving smaller organizations more breathing room. Or, more accurately, more room to stuff the digital attic full of rubbish until Outlook wheezes and some poor admin has to explain why mailbox bloat is not, in fact, a backup strategy. Still, from a practical standpoint, it’s useful as hell for users with large mail volumes, shared responsibilities, or a pathological inability to delete anything from 2017.

The important bit is that this is a meaningful upgrade for businesses that were previously stuck with lower limits and had to juggle archiving, cleanup policies, and user whining every time someone got the dreaded “mailbox full” warning. With 100 GB, there’s less immediate pressure to micromanage mailbox size, which means fewer tickets from people acting like the end of civilization has arrived because their mailbox is 99% full of attachments named Final_v3_REAL_FINAL2.xlsx.

The article also points out the usual Microsoft caveat circus: rollout timing, licensing specifics, and feature availability can vary, because of course they bloody can. Nothing in cloud licensing can ever be straightforward. There’s always some footnote, admin center lag, regional delay, or SKU nonsense waiting in the weeds to ruin your afternoon. So if you’re the poor sod administering this stuff, you still need to verify exactly which tenants and plans get the increase and when it actually shows up.

Bottom line: this is good news for Microsoft 365 Business customers. More mailbox space means fewer support headaches, less frantic cleanup, and a bit more parity with the higher-tier plans. On the other hand, it also enables users to keep mountains of useless email forever, which is exactly the sort of operational nightmare people create when given more storage and absolutely no discipline. Progress, apparently, is just letting people keep more shit.

Anecdote time: years ago, some executive screamed that deleting email was “destroying corporate knowledge,” right up until I found his 28 GB mailbox was mostly golf confirmations, cat pictures, and every all-staff message since the dawn of time. He wanted more quota. I wanted a flamethrower. Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, has now sided with him. Fantastic.
