Microsoft asks users to ignore ‘Antivirus is turned off’ errors

Microsoft Tells Users to Ignore “Antivirus Is Turned Off” Errors, Because Apparently That’s Fine Now

Right, so Microsoft has managed to cough up yet another masterpiece of modern computing: Windows is throwing out warnings telling people their antivirus is turned off when, in fact, it bloody well isn’t. And Microsoft’s official guidance? Basically: “Ignore it.” Fantastic. Really inspires confidence, doesn’t it?

The issue affects Windows Security on some systems, where users are seeing alerts claiming local security authority protection or antivirus protection is disabled, even though the protection is still running properly underneath the hood. So users get to play everyone’s favorite game: Is this a real security problem, or did Microsoft just screw up again?

According to the article, Microsoft says this is just a reporting bug. In other words, the security status display is lying through its teeth, but the actual antivirus engine is still doing its job. That’s supposed to be reassuring, I guess. “Don’t worry, the warning system that’s meant to tell you when something is wrong is only falsely saying something is wrong.” Brilliant bit of engineering there, you useless shower of muppets.

Naturally, this kind of cock-up creates exactly the sort of confusion you’d expect. Users are trained to take security warnings seriously, and now they’re being told to ignore this one because it’s bullshit. Which is always a great precedent. Today it’s a false antivirus alert, tomorrow people shrug off the real thing because Microsoft cried wolf too many damn times.

Microsoft says it’s working on a fix, which is corporate speak for “we noticed the mess after everyone else did, and now we’ll patch it whenever the gods of Redmond stop laughing.” Until then, affected users are being told not to panic if they see warnings saying antivirus is off when other indicators show protections are active.

So the short version, for those who don’t enjoy being jerked around by broken status messages: Windows may claim your antivirus is off, but in these cases it’s apparently still on. The alert is the broken part. The protection itself is supposedly fine. You just have to trust the same people who shipped the shitshow in the first place.

I was once called in because a manager swore the server room was “under cyberattack” because every monitor was flashing warnings. Turned out some idiot had set the alert sound to a klaxon and the UPS software was whining about a battery test. Same energy here: lots of screaming, not much actual danger, and an entire department too incompetent to tell the difference.
