Mathspace Got Its Shit Stolen: Over 1 Million People Caught in Yet Another Bloody Data Breach
Well, what a surprise. Another education platform has gone and faceplanted into the flaming dumpster of cybersecurity incompetence. This time it’s Mathspace, which disclosed a data breach affecting more than 1 million people. Because apparently securing personal data is still too much fucking effort for some organizations.
According to the report, Mathspace said it detected suspicious activity on its systems and found that an unauthorized third party accessed customer data. The breach impacts students, parents, and teachers, because when these things go wrong, they never just screw over one group of people — they hose everyone in the vicinity.
The stolen information reportedly includes full names, email addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, school information, and hashed passwords. In some cases, home addresses may also have been exposed. So, not necessarily the absolute worst pile of data imaginable, but still a rich enough buffet for scammers, phishers, and other digital parasites to start licking their chops.
Mathspace says there’s no evidence that financial information or government ID documents were accessed. Lovely. That’s supposed to make everyone feel better, is it? “Good news, everyone, the burglars only stole the front half of your identity.” Fantastic. Bloody reassuring.
The company has brought in cybersecurity experts, notified regulators, and started contacting affected individuals. As always, the cleanup crew arrives after the server room has already been metaphorically set on fire and danced on by some malicious little goblin with a data exfiltration script.
If you’re affected, the usual miserable routine applies: reset your password, especially if you reused it anywhere else like a maniac; watch out for phishing emails and scam calls; and generally prepare for the next wave of opportunistic bullshit that follows these breaches like flies around a dead badger.
The bigger lesson, if anyone in management has two functioning brain cells to rub together, is that organizations handling kids’ and schools’ data should maybe — just maybe — treat security like it matters before a million records go walkabout. But no, that would require planning, budget, and competence, three things rarer than a quiet day in IT.
Anyway, this all reminds me of the time a junior admin told me backups were “basically the same as security.” Three days later he was crying into a keyboard while I restored the mess he’d made and explained, very slowly, that keeping copies of your crap does not stop idiots or bastards from stealing it. Funny old world.
