Everything New You Can Do With Siri AI

Everything New You Can Do With Siri AI, Apparently

Right, so Apple finally decided Siri should stop acting like a confused intern trapped in a smart speaker and start pretending to be useful. According to the article, the big pitch is that Siri is getting stuffed full of “Apple Intelligence,” which is corporate-speak for “we bolted AI onto it and now we’re praying you’ll clap.”

The new Siri is supposed to be more natural to talk to, which is lovely, because the old Siri had all the conversational grace of a dead printer with a firmware problem. Now you can stumble over your words, change your mind mid-sentence, and Siri is allegedly smart enough to keep up. Bloody revolutionary: your assistant can now survive a normal human sentence without shitting itself.

It’s also getting better personal context, meaning it can dig through your stuff—messages, mail, calendar, notes, and whatever other digital junk pile you’ve built—and answer questions based on that. So instead of manually searching like some kind of caveperson, you can ask things like when your mom’s flight lands or what restaurant someone mentioned in a text three weeks ago. Convenient, yes. Also mildly horrifying, because naturally the machine has to know all your business before it can be helpful.

Then there’s on-screen awareness, which means Siri can understand what’s currently on your device and do something with it. If someone sends you an address, a photo, or some other bit of nonsense, Siri can act on it without you having to copy-paste like a chump. In theory, anyway. In practice, we’ll see whether it’s magic or the usual AI smoke and mirrors with a nicer animation.

Apple is also making Siri more capable inside apps, so you can do more specific actions just by asking. Edit this photo, send that file, move this note, summarize that crap—less tapping, more bossing your phone around. Which is exactly how it should be. If I own the slab of glass, it should damn well obey.

And because apparently no modern tech announcement is complete without dragging in ChatGPT, Siri can hand some requests off to OpenAI when it decides Apple’s own system can’t handle the job. Apple claims it’ll ask permission first, which is nice, because at least the bloody thing warns you before punting your question to another company’s AI. So now you’ve got Siri as a receptionist, sending the hard work to ChatGPT while pretending it was all one seamless experience. Classic management behavior.

The article also points out the privacy angle, because Apple loves polishing that halo. A lot of this processing is meant to happen on-device, and when it goes to the cloud it’s supposedly through Apple’s more private setup. Fine. Good. Wonderful. Still, whenever a giant corporation starts chanting about privacy while expanding system-wide AI access to your personal data, I reserve the goddamn right to squint suspiciously.

So the short version: Siri is getting less useless, more aware of your personal crap, better at understanding messy human requests, able to work across apps and whatever’s on your screen, and ready to pass the buck to ChatGPT when things get hairy. It’s the biggest attempt yet to turn Siri from a punchline into something you might actually use on purpose. We’ll find out soon enough whether it’s genuinely smarter or just the same old shit in a shinier package.

Anecdote time: years ago, I watched a voice assistant fail to set a simple reminder three times, then cheerfully suggest a web search for “remind me tomorrow, you useless bastard.” If this new Siri can avoid that level of fuckwittery, maybe there’s hope for civilization after all. Probably not, but miracles happen.
