New ‘BlueMoon’ kit exploited Windows and Chrome zero-day flaws

Bluemoon: Yet Another Pile of Exploit Shit Hitting Windows and Chrome

Right, so some enterprising bastards have been peddling a shiny new exploit kit called Bluemoon, because apparently the internet didn’t already have enough criminal crap floating around. According to the article, this thing was spotted in the wild exploiting zero-day flaws in both Windows and Google Chrome, which is exactly the sort of nightmare that keeps defenders awake and vendors issuing “we take security seriously” statements while everything burns.

The researchers found that Bluemoon was being used in active attacks and chained together a Chrome sandbox escape and a Windows privilege escalation. In plain English for the management class: visiting the wrong site could let attackers run malicious code, break out of Chrome’s protections, and then get higher privileges on the machine. In other words, the usual awful story: one bug gets you in, another bug helps you stomp around the system like you own the bloody place.

The kit reportedly used a Chrome zero-day along with a Windows zero-day, making it particularly nasty because zero-days are the gift that keeps on screwing everyone until patches land. The whole setup was tied to exploit-kit activity targeting users through compromised or malicious websites, because naturally the scumbags behind this don’t bother writing software that helps humanity — they’d rather weaponize browsers and operating systems for cash.

The important bit, if you can stop screaming into the void for a second, is that patching matters. Google and Microsoft addressed the flaws, so if some poor sod hasn’t updated Chrome or Windows, they’re basically volunteering to be test equipment for crooks. This is the part where IT tells everyone to reboot, users ignore it for three weeks, and then act shocked when their machine starts behaving like a haunted toaster.

Security researchers also noted this as part of the continuing evolution of exploit kits — yes, those bloody things are still around — and Bluemoon shows attackers are happy to use high-end browser and OS flaws when they can get them. So if anyone was under the delusion that modern protections made this crap go away, surprise: the bastards just adapted, as bastards do.

Bottom line: Bluemoon is a nasty exploit kit that abused Chrome and Windows zero-days in the wild, chained them together for more reliable compromise, and reminded everyone yet again that unpatched systems are a flaming liability. Same circus, slightly different clowns, and the shitshow rolls on.

This reminds me of a place where they delayed browser updates because one executive didn’t like the new icon. Two weeks later, half the office was infected, and suddenly the icon wasn’t the fucking issue anymore. Funny how that works.
