Google Wants Gemini to Make Your Damn Phone Calls for You
Google is testing yet another “helpful” AI trick, this time letting Gemini call businesses on your behalf, because apparently even asking a plumber for prices is now too much human suffering to endure. The rollout is starting with U.S. Pixel owners, because of course Google has to make this shit a limited experiment before inflicting it on everyone else.
The basic idea is simple: instead of you calling a business yourself like some kind of medieval peasant, Gemini can place the call, ask questions, and gather details for you. Think store hours, service pricing, appointment availability, and all the boring crap people hate dealing with. In other words, Google is trying to turn your phone into an automated errand goblin.
This smells a lot like the old Google Duplex stunt, where the machine would call places and talk in a suspiciously human way. Only now it’s dressed up in fresh Gemini branding, because reusing the same idea with new marketing paint is practically a holy sacrament in Silicon Valley. The pitch is convenience. The reality is that businesses may soon get to enjoy even more AI-generated nuisance calls while customers sit back pretending this is revolutionary as fuck.
According to the report, this is an early test and only available for a limited set of users and scenarios. So no, Gemini is not fully replacing your social anxiety-ridden ass just yet. But it does show where Google wants this to go: AI assistants that don’t just answer questions, but actually do shit in the real world, or at least harass local businesses until they cough up information.
For Pixel owners in the U.S., this means they may soon be able to offload one more tedious task onto Google’s ever-expanding pile of machine-learning nonsense. For everyone else, it means waiting around while Google beta-tests whether the public will tolerate robot calls wearing a friendly assistant mask. Spoiler: if it saves people five minutes and one awkward conversation, they’ll line up for it like it’s the second coming of the fucking smartphone.
The bigger picture, if you can stomach it, is that AI assistants are being pushed beyond chat windows and into actual task execution. Today it’s calling a business for opening hours. Tomorrow it’ll probably be arguing with your insurance provider, ordering your groceries, and somehow still failing to set a reliable alarm. Progress, my ass.
Anyway, this whole thing reminds me of a user who once begged me for an easier way to call tech support because “the hold music was stressing him out.” I solved the problem the proper way: I unplugged his desk phone and told him the system was down. He thanked me for the peace and quiet. That, dear reader, is how you provide customer satisfaction without building an AI that chats with a tire shop.
