SpaceXAI targets more than doubling Colossus 2 Nvidia chips by year-end

xAI Wants to Stuff Colossus with Even More Nvidia Chips, Because Apparently “Too Much” Is Not in the Vocabulary

Right, here’s the gist of this shitshow. xAI is planning to more than double the size of its Colossus AI supercluster by the end of the year, cramming in around 2 million Nvidia GPUs. Because when you’re building giant AI toys, clearly the answer is always “add another few hundred thousand expensive-as-fuck chips and see what catches fire.”

The article says Colossus already has a ridiculous number of GPUs, and now xAI wants to scale the whole bloody thing even further. The point, obviously, is to train larger AI models, do it faster, and keep up in the ongoing tech industry pissing contest where everyone pretends burning mountains of cash and electricity is just “innovation.” Nvidia, naturally, is right in the middle of this, because every AI company on Earth seems determined to back a truck full of money up to Jensen Huang’s house.

There’s also the usual bit about infrastructure headaches: power, cooling, physical buildout, networking, and all the other miserable little details that some poor bastard in operations has to deal with while executives slap each other on the back about “vision.” You don’t just toss 2 million GPUs into a room next to the coffee machine. You need massive facilities, insane power delivery, enough cooling to keep the whole damn thing from turning into a molten crater, and networking that doesn’t fall over the second someone starts a training run.

And that’s really the point of the piece: xAI isn’t thinking small. It’s going all in on a colossal GPU expansion to push its AI ambitions harder and faster. More chips, more scale, more cost, more power consumption, more pressure on supply chains, and more opportunities for something to break at 3 a.m. while management sleeps like babies. Same old story, just with more zeroes and more bullshit.

If you ask me, this reminds me of the time management demanded we “just add capacity” to a dying server farm without approving better cooling. By Friday, the racks were screaming, the monitoring dashboard looked like a Christmas tree from hell, and suddenly the same idiots who ignored every warning wanted a miracle. Funny how that works.
