Bitget resumes Bitcoin withdrawals after $387.5 million crypto heist

Bitget Gets Mugged for $38.75 Million, Then Pretends Everything’s Fine

Right, here’s the latest slab of crypto clownery: Bitget, the exchange where people apparently park obscene amounts of digital magic beans, got smacked for roughly $38.75 million in a hot wallet hack. And because this is crypto, the company’s response was basically, “Nothing to see here, you panicky bastards, withdrawals are back on.”

According to the report, attackers drained a Bitget hot wallet, making off with a disgusting pile of assets. The exchange then suspended Bitcoin withdrawals for a while, presumably so everyone in management could run around screaming, pointing at dashboards, and asking whose bright idea it was to leave that much shit exposed in the first place.

Bitget says it has now resumed Bitcoin withdrawals after taking what it claims are extra security measures. Marvelous. Because nothing restores confidence like a company getting robbed for nearly forty million bucks and then announcing it’s all under control after the digital equivalent of putting a new padlock on a barn door the horses already kicked through.

The exchange also said customer funds are safe and losses will be covered. Of course they did. That’s the line every platform trots out after getting its arse handed to it by hackers. Still, in this case, Bitget appears to be saying it has enough reserves to absorb the loss without dumping the damage directly onto users, which, by crypto standards, counts as unusually competent.

The broader point, in case anyone still needs it tattooed on their forehead, is that hot wallets are juicy targets. If you leave piles of valuable assets connected to the internet, eventually some enterprising little shit with the right skills is going to come along and help themselves. Then everyone acts shocked, writes solemn statements, and promises “enhanced security” like that phrase isn’t already beaten to death.

So the short version: Bitget got hacked, lost $38.75 million, paused Bitcoin withdrawals, then turned them back on after saying it tightened security and would cover the losses. Users can breathe again, at least until the next catastrophic screw-up comes barreling down the pipeline, which in crypto is less an “if” and more a “when the fuck.”

Anecdote time: this reminds me of a sysadmin I once knew who ignored every warning about exposed admin panels because “it’ll be fine.” Then one morning the servers were spewing garbage, the backups were stale, and he stood there clutching a coffee like it might reverse entropy. Same energy here, just with more blockchain buzzwords and a much bigger pile of money on fire.
