ChatGPT Can Now Virtually Try On Clothes for You, Because Apparently Even Shopping Needed More AI Bullshit
Well, here we fucking are. OpenAI has decided that ChatGPT shouldn’t just answer your stupid questions and hallucinate legal advice — now it can also play digital dress-up and let you virtually try on clothes. Because clearly the world was crying out for an AI-powered fitting room instead of, say, systems that don’t occasionally make shit up.
According to TechCrunch, ChatGPT’s new feature lets users upload a photo of themselves and then see how different outfits might look on their body. The idea is the usual shiny retail nonsense: make online shopping less of a gamble, reduce returns, and convince people to buy more crap with the comforting illusion that the machine knows what a jacket will look like on their torso.
The whole thing is aimed at making fashion e-commerce feel more “personalized,” which is corporate-speak for “we want your photos, your measurements, your preferences, and every other scrap of data we can hoover up.” Users can supposedly get a better sense of fit and style before buying, which sounds lovely right up until the technology puts your arms in the wrong place or decides a wool coat should cling to you like wet fucking wallpaper.
To be fair — and I hate being fair — this kind of feature could actually be useful. Online clothes shopping is a spectacularly broken mess where “medium” means three different goddamn things depending on which brand’s overpriced rags you’re buying. If AI can give people a rough idea of how something might look, that may save time, money, and the soul-destroying ritual of returning pants that fit like a sack of angry curtains.
Of course, the catch is that it’s still AI, so you should probably treat it the same way you’d treat a drunk sysadmin with root access: cautiously, and with a fire extinguisher nearby. A virtual try-on can show an approximation, not reality. Fabric texture, movement, weird sizing, and all the other annoying details of actual clothing still exist, no matter how much marketing slaps the word “smart” on the pile.
So the short version: ChatGPT now wants to be your personal fitting room, fashion assistant, and retail enabler all at once. It’s another step in AI’s ongoing march into every boring corner of human life, this time with shirts and trousers. Maybe it’ll help people shop better. Maybe it’ll just create new and exciting ways to be disappointed by a fucking cardigan.
This reminds me of a user who once insisted the server was “eating” his spreadsheets, when in fact he’d saved everything into /tmp and rebooted the machine himself. Now the machines are styling your wardrobe too. Splendid. Next week some genius will ask why the AI made him look like a discount Bond villain in beige chinos.
