Microsoft Finally Unfucks a Windows Bug Causing Black Screens and Explorer to Crap Itself
Well, shock of fucking shocks, Microsoft has actually fixed a Windows bug that was making some systems boot into black screens and causing File Explorer to fall over like a drunk intern on a Friday night. According to the article, the mess was tied to recent Windows updates, because of course it bloody was. Nothing says “quality assurance” quite like pushing out an update that makes the desktop vanish into the void.
The problem hit some Windows 11 systems, where users were greeted with a lovely black screen after signing in, while Explorer.exe decided it had better things to do than function. You know, minor stuff. Just the shell responsible for making the operating system usable. Absolutely top-tier work there.
Microsoft says it fixed the issue using Known Issue Rollback, which is corporate speak for “we broke it, then quietly tried to unbreak it before too many people started screaming.” The rollback is meant to automatically reach affected consumer devices, though managed enterprise systems may need admins to fiddle with Group Policy settings to push the fix through. Because when there’s a disaster, why not make sysadmins shovel extra shit too?
The company also provided details for IT admins dealing with the fallout, since apparently “have you tried apologizing to your users?” isn’t an officially supported remediation step. If you’re in a business environment, you may need to install and configure a special Group Policy to reverse the borked non-security update behavior. Marvelous. Break it globally, fix it manually.
So the short version is this: Microsoft shipped an update, the update screwed up Explorer and left people staring at black screens, then Microsoft rolled out a fix using its rollback system. In other words, the usual patching circus: release problem, deny panic, issue fix, hope everyone forgets the whole damn thing by next week when the next update catches fire.
Anecdote time: this reminds me of a place where management insisted every update be installed immediately because “security is everyone’s responsibility.” Ten minutes later half the office was staring at black screens, and suddenly it became my responsibility to “restore productivity.” Funny how that works when the shit hits the fan. I fixed it, billed the overtime, and enjoyed the sound of panicked executives learning what “change control” means.
