Nscale and Anthropic Are Apparently About to Set Another $45 Billion on Fire
Right, so according to TechCrunch, Nscale and Anthropic are reportedly sniffing around yet another absolutely deranged $45 billion compute deal, because apparently the current method of advancing AI is to keep backing dump trucks full of money up to data centers until someone shouts “AGI” and the shareholders clap like trained seals.
The gist of it is this: Anthropic, already one of the biggest consumers of planet-sized piles of compute, may be lining up even more infrastructure through Nscale. Why? Because these giant AI outfits burn through GPUs like an incompetent sysadmin burns through backup tapes — fast, expensively, and with a lot of hand-waving about “strategic capacity.”
Nscale, for its part, is one of the latest outfits trying to become indispensable in the great AI land grab, where everyone with access to chips, power, cooling, and enough concrete to build a warehouse suddenly gets treated like they’re running the fucking spice trade from Dune. If this deal happens, it would be one more sign that the AI boom isn’t slowing down — it’s just getting more absurd, more capital-intensive, and more likely to leave a smoking crater in someone’s balance sheet.
The broader point, in case the money haze hasn’t knocked you unconscious, is that compute has become the choke point. Not ideas. Not talent. Not products. Compute. Whoever controls the GPUs and data center capacity gets to charge eye-watering sums while AI companies smile through gritted teeth and sign the paperwork anyway, because not having enough compute is apparently worse than spending tens of billions like a drunken procurement officer with someone else’s corporate card.
So yes, yet another giant compute deal may be on the table. Anthropic wants the horsepower, Nscale wants the cash and relevance, and the rest of us get to watch this industrial-scale pissing contest and pretend it all sounds perfectly normal. Forty-five billion dollars. Again. For compute. Sure. Fine. Nothing insane about that shit whatsoever.
Related anecdote: this reminds me of a place I once worked where management refused to approve a $200 replacement switch, then happily signed off on a seven-figure “transformation initiative” after some consultant used the words “future-ready architecture” in a slide deck. The network still died every Thursday, but by God the invoice was visionary. Same bloody energy here.
