Microsoft says October updates didn’t actually fix VPN issues

Microsoft “Fixed” the VPN Bug? Yeah, About That Bullshit.

So here’s the short version, because apparently even in 2026 we still have to explain that “fixed” should mean the fucking problem is actually gone. Microsoft told everyone it had addressed VPN issues caused by recent Windows updates. Admins, poor desperate bastards that they are, probably allowed themselves a tiny flicker of hope. Bad move.

According to the article, the supposed fix didn’t actually fix the VPN problems for a load of users. People were still seeing broken VPN connections after installing the updates that were meant to sort the mess out. Which is classic Microsoft: kick over the server rack, announce the incident is resolved, then stroll off while everything is still on fire.

The issue traces back to Windows updates that caused VPN connection failures, especially with L2TP/IPsec connections. Microsoft later pushed out updates and said the matter was handled. Except, surprise surprise, reports kept coming in that the shit was still broken. Because apparently quality assurance now consists of whispering “it’ll probably be fine” into the void and shipping it anyway.

What makes this extra annoying is that businesses and remote workers rely on VPNs to do their jobs without physically camping under someone’s desk in the office. When Microsoft breaks that, it’s not some cute little cosmetic bug. It’s real downtime, real disruption, and real admins having to explain for the fiftieth time that no, they didn’t personally break the internet before breakfast.

The article points out that Microsoft has acknowledged ongoing problems and is still investigating. So the big heroic “we fixed it” moment turns out to be more like “we threw a patch at it and hoped nobody would notice the corpse twitching.” In other words: not fixed, still busted, thanks for playing.

If you’re an admin dealing with this crap, the takeaway is simple: don’t trust the first cheerful vendor statement saying everything’s resolved. Test the damned updates yourself, keep rollback plans handy, and assume that any patch described as a fix may actually be an audition for the next outage.

I once watched a sysadmin declare a VPN issue solved because one user managed to connect exactly once before the whole thing shit itself again ten minutes later. He announced victory, went for coffee, and came back to twenty-seven angry emails and a director standing by his desk like the angel of professional consequences. Moral of the story: if it’s still broken for everyone except Gary in Accounts, it’s not fucking fixed.
