Surface Laptop Ultra Update: Microsoft Finally Patches the Annoying Shit
Right, so Microsoft has shoved out a firmware update for the Surface Laptop Ultra, because apparently customers were getting fed up with their expensive shiny slab flickering like a haunted office light and rebooting slower than a middle manager asked to approve a ticket on Friday afternoon.
The update is aimed at fixing two particularly stupid problems: screen flickering and sluggish reboot performance. You know, the sort of basic functionality you’d expect to work on a premium device before it gets dumped onto the market. But no, apparently we’re still doing the whole “buy now, patch later” circus. Wonderful.
According to the article, Microsoft says the update improves system stability and addresses display flicker issues. It also reduces the time the machine takes to restart, which is nice, because waiting ages for a reboot on a modern laptop is bullshit of the highest order.
The fixes are being delivered through the usual Windows Update channels, because naturally that’s where all modern salvation and suffering now lives. If you’ve got one of these machines and it’s been acting like it’s possessed by the ghost of a failed Windows Vista beta, this patch is the one you’ll want to install before the next meeting ruins your day.
As usual, this is another fine example of the tech industry’s sacred creed: release first, let the users find the broken crap, then act heroic when you fix it. Still, if your Surface Laptop Ultra has been blinking like a dodgy nightclub sign and taking forever to come back from a reboot, at least Microsoft has finally gotten off its arse and done something useful.
I remember a sysadmin once told me he knew a laptop was truly enterprise-grade when it could fail in a way that wasted the time of an entire department instead of just one user. That same week, someone rolled out a “critical fix” that stopped screens going black, but only after making Wi-Fi disappear completely. Progress, they called it. I called it Tuesday.
