UNM Health ransomware attack disrupts patient care, surgeries

UNM Health Gets Kneecapped by Ransomware, and Guess Who Suffers? The Patients. Fucking Brilliant.

So here’s the latest entry in the never-ending parade of institutional cock-ups: UNM Health got smacked by a ransomware attack, and the fallout has been exactly the sort of shitshow anyone with a functioning brain could have predicted. The attack disrupted patient care, forced some surgeries to be postponed, and generally turned healthcare delivery into an even bigger bureaucratic swamp than usual.

According to the report, UNM Health confirmed that it detected suspicious activity on its network and had to take systems offline to contain the damage. Which is corporate-speak for: “Oh hell, the bastards are in, pull the plugs before everything catches fire.” That meant staff had to fall back on manual processes, paper records, and all the other delightful relics of the last century that hospitals pretend they can still use efficiently in a crisis. Spoiler: they can’t.

The disruption hit multiple parts of the health system, screwing with appointments, communications, and patient services. Some surgeries had to be rescheduled, and patients were told to expect delays. Because nothing says “world-class healthcare” like showing up for treatment only to find the computers are fucked and everyone’s scrambling around with clipboards like it’s 1987.

UNM Health said emergency care was still available, which is nice, I suppose, if your standards have collapsed into a smoking crater. But across the board, the attack caused significant operational problems while IT and security teams worked to contain the incident and figure out what the hell had been compromised. At the time of reporting, the full scope of the attack and whether data was stolen had not yet been nailed down.

And that’s the really infuriating part of this crap: ransomware gangs don’t just encrypt files and demand money like common digital muggers. They also derail critical services, screw over patients, and dump chaos into places that really shouldn’t have to deal with this nonsense while trying to keep people alive. Hospitals are soft targets far too often, and the consequences are ugly as hell.

So the short version? UNM Health got hit, systems went sideways, surgeries and care were disrupted, and now everyone gets to enjoy the standard incident-response ritual of downtime, delays, vague public statements, and a mountain of expensive recovery work. Another sterling example of why cybersecurity in healthcare keeps being treated like a fucking afterthought right up until the moment the machines stop working.

Reminds me of the time some overpaid executive insisted backups, segmentation, and incident drills were “non-essential spending” — right up until the day the network went tits-up and he was asking why admissions, payroll, and radiology were all dead at once. Funny how “too expensive” becomes “why didn’t anyone warn me?” the minute the shit hits the fan.
