Ivanti Screws the Pooch Again: Two More Zero-Days, Because Of Course They Did
Right, here we fucking go again. Ivanti has patched two more zero-day vulnerabilities in its Connect Secure and Policy Secure products, because apparently shipping security software without gaping holes in it is just too much to ask. These bugs were actively exploited in the wild, naturally, because why would attackers ever pass up a free buffet of enterprise stupidity?
The two flaws are CVE-2024-22024, a XXE bug, and CVE-2024-21893, a server-side request forgery issue. On their own, these are already a pain in the arse, but the really fun part is they were apparently chained together in attacks. Because one catastrophic screw-up just isn’t enough anymore; now we do vulnerability combos like it’s a fucking tasting menu.
According to the report, these flaws affected Ivanti Connect Secure 9.x and 22.x and Ivanti Policy Secure. Ivanti pushed patches, though not all at once, because apparently timely patching is also a luxury feature now. Customers were told to install fixes immediately, which is always a comforting thing to hear after attackers have already been stomping around the network.
This latest mess comes on top of Ivanti’s already embarrassing parade of recent security disasters, including previous zero-days tied to remote code execution and auth bypass. If you’re keeping score at home, Ivanti appliances have lately had all the structural integrity of a damp cardboard box in a server room fire.
Security researchers observed that the bugs were used in targeted attacks, and defenders were once again left playing forensic janitor after the criminals had their fun. The advice is the usual soul-crushing checklist: patch now, check for compromise, monitor logs, reset credentials, and assume the worst. Because in this line of work, assuming everything is on fire is less paranoia and more standard operating procedure.
Ivanti also provided mitigation guidance and urged admins to use its Integrity Checker Tool. Which is lovely, except by the time vendors tell you to run a checker tool, the bastards may already have had a nice leisurely wander through your infrastructure, nicked your secrets, and pissed in the backup tapes.
So the short version? Two more Ivanti zero-days, actively exploited, patched after the fact, and chained together by attackers for maximum chaos. If your organization is running this stuff and you haven’t patched yet, stop whatever other useless meeting or spreadsheet you’re fiddling with and fix the damned thing before it gets even uglier.
This sort of shit reminds me of a place where management ignored repeated warnings about a vulnerable VPN box because updating it might “cause disruption.” A week later, the network got rooted, the helpdesk phones melted, and suddenly the same muppets were asking why nobody had “proactively prevented” the incident. Funny how they never ask that before everything goes to hell.
