Google will let schools disable its AI tools, but not without sacrificing Search

Google’s “Choice” for Schools: Turn Off the AI Crap, Lose Search Too

Right, so Google has graciously decided to let schools disable its AI tools. How magnanimous. Except — because of course there’s a catch — if a school wants to switch off the AI slop, it may also have to give up Google Search in the process. Real generous, that. It’s the corporate equivalent of saying, “Sure, you can stop eating the suspicious cafeteria meat, but only if you give up lunch entirely.”

The article lays out how schools have been trying to get more control over what students and teachers are exposed to, especially as every bloated tech company on Earth keeps shoving AI into products whether anyone asked for the shit or not. Teachers and administrators want the ability to say, “No thanks, we don’t want hallucinating homework bots and data-hoovering nonsense in our classrooms.” Reasonable, you’d think. But this is Google, so naturally the answer is wrapped in a steaming pile of conditions.

The central bit of bullshit is that schools can disable the AI features, but not neatly, cleanly, or without collateral damage. If they want to avoid the AI layer, they may have to disable Search entirely for some users. Because apparently Google has intertwined the two so thoroughly that pulling out the AI parasite risks taking down the host with it. Funny how “flexibility” always seems to mean “do it our way or get fucked.”

That leaves schools with a fantastic choice: keep the AI tools running and deal with the risks, confusion, and questionable outputs they bring, or shut them off and sacrifice one of the most basic and widely used educational tools on the platform. That’s not really a choice; that’s coercion wearing a polo shirt and a product manager smile.

And let’s not ignore the bigger picture here. This is yet another example of Big Tech jamming AI into everything with all the subtlety of a drunken sysadmin kicking in a server room door. Then, when users ask for an off switch, they discover the damned thing is welded to some other critical service. “Oops,” says the company, “turns out the kill switch also blows up half the building.” Splendid engineering, you useless bastards.

For schools, this matters because they’re dealing with kids, privacy concerns, academic integrity issues, and the very real problem that AI systems can produce utter garbage with a polished tone that makes it sound authoritative. Educators aren’t being anti-technology here; they’re asking for basic administrative control. You know, the kind of thing any sane system should have had before launch instead of being duct-taped on afterward by people chasing quarterly buzzword quotas.

So the short version is this: Google is offering schools a way to disable AI tools, but the price may be losing Search access too. Which means the “solution” is really just another bit of platform strong-arming disguised as customer choice. Same old shit, different keynote.

Reminds me of the time management said users could opt out of the new “smart” ticketing system. Sure they could — by losing access to the help desk entirely. Funny how the complaints dropped to zero after that. Bastards called it success. I called it Tuesday.
