Visual Studio Code 1.145 adds remote agent previews and cron scheduling

VS Code 1.145: More Remote Agent Crap, Cron Scheduling, and the Usual Shiny Admin Bait

Right, so Microsoft has shoved out Visual Studio Code 1.145, and this time the headline features are remote agent previews and cron scheduling. Because apparently what the world needed was even more ways to run shit remotely and automate jobs that someone will inevitably forget about until production starts screaming at 3 a.m.

The big deal in this release is the preview of remote agents. The idea is that VS Code can interact with services and environments that aren’t sitting neatly on your local box, which sounds handy until you remember every additional layer of abstraction is another opportunity for something to fail in a weird, undocumented, soul-destroying way. Still, if you’re juggling remote development environments, this may save you from some of the usual misery.

Then there’s cron scheduling, which is Microsoft’s way of saying, “Here, automate your repetitive tasks without having to duct-tape together another half-broken workaround.” In fairness, this could actually be useful for recurring jobs and workflows. Of course, give people scheduling tools and they’ll create an unholy mess of automated nonsense they won’t document, then act surprised when it all goes to shit six months later.

The release also includes the usual collection of improvements, refinements, and quality-of-life tweaks. You know the drill: some bits get faster, some interfaces get polished, some features become slightly less annoying, and somewhere in the background another setting gets added that nobody asked for but everyone will have to troubleshoot anyway.

The article points out that these updates are aimed at making VS Code more capable for developers and admins who need better remote workflow support and more automation inside the editor. Which is fine. Anything that cuts down on manual repetition is good, assuming it doesn’t introduce three fresh categories of bullshit in exchange for one convenience feature.

So the summary is this: VS Code 1.145 adds remote agent previews, adds cron scheduling, and continues its relentless march toward becoming the Swiss Army chainsaw of development tools. Useful? Probably. Overcomplicated? Almost certainly. Will people install it anyway and pretend they’ve mastered it after clicking around for five bastard minutes? Absolutely.

I remember one idiot who automated a maintenance task with cron, forgot the timezone, and spent a week blaming “the network” while his job happily nuked reports during business hours. He even opened a high-priority ticket about “random system instability.” Random, my arse. That’s automation for you: it saves time right up until it screws you with machine precision.
